- Manufacturing in Mexico
Key Takeaways
Jump to Section
Hermosillo combines an established manufacturing workforce and supplier base with direct access north through Nogales into Arizona and the western United States. Ford has manufactured in the city since 1986, and companies including GE Aerospace continue to invest in advanced production here. For a manufacturer evaluating Mexico, the value is the combination: proven industry, technical talent, US connectivity and a diversified industrial base.
A proven manufacturing ecosystem
Global companies have built complex products in Hermosillo for four decades, and the ones already here are still putting capital in.
Ford’s Hermosillo plant has run since 1986, built its seven-millionth vehicle in June 2024, and produced a record 357,000 Bronco Sport and Maverick units in 2025. In May 2026 GE Aerospace announced MXN 725 million for its Hermosillo plant, which machines compressor blades and turbine disks for the LEAP and GEnx engine families. Around them sits a supplier and manufacturing base that includes TE Connectivity, Amphenol, Becton Dickinson, Lear, Faurecia, Flex-N-Gate, Martinrea, Leoni, Latecoere and Stanley Black and Decker. That base spans electronics, cable, seating and interiors, metalworking and automotive components.

Sonora’s aerospace base includes engine components, precision machining and thermal processing, concentrated in Hermosillo and Guaymas, and GE Aerospace’s investment is the clearest recent evidence that advanced manufacturing already works here. For an aerospace buyer, the certifications and processes behind that base are set out on our aerospace industry page.
Direct access to the western United States
Freight leaving Hermosillo runs north on Federal Highway 15D, crosses at the Mariposa commercial port in Nogales, and joins Interstate 19 within a few hundred feet of the border. I-19 runs 63 miles to Interstate 10 in Tucson. For most northbound freight, that is the primary lane: Highway 15D through the Mariposa commercial crossing at Nogales.
~175 mi

4,000+
trucks a day of design capacity at the rebuilt Mariposa commercial crossing
408,584

Mariposa was rebuilt in 2014 with a design capacity of more than 4,000 trucks a day, and the Nogales ports recorded 408,584 northbound trucks in 2025. Commercial hours run Monday to Friday, 8:00 to 19:00 Mountain Standard Time, with reduced weekend hours, so build your dispatch schedule around the cargo window. Tetakawi operates a cross-dock in Tucson, so the consolidation point sits north of the crossing. Hermosillo’s international airport, seven miles from the Río Sonora Campus, has daily non-stop service to Phoenix and is in a MXN 1,076 million expansion through 2029.
Manufacturing talent built over decades
Hermosillo has an established manufacturing labor base. The metro area had 447,075 people employed in the second quarter of 2026 (INEGI), and the technical and engineering pipeline behind it is aligned with automotive, aerospace, electronics and industrial production.
Sonora graduated 5,721 students from university-level engineering programs in 2024-25 (ANFEI, from SEP data), and the Universidad de Sonora, the Instituto Tecnológico de Hermosillo and the Universidad Tecnológica de Hermosillo all run mechatronics, industrial and aeronautics programs. Manufacturers train into that system directly: Ford runs a dual mechatronics program with the CECyTES technical high schools, and the state training institute added aerospace harness courses with Latecoere in 2026.
Whether your plant staffs on schedule depends on the roles, the shift structure, the pay position and the size of the ramp. That is why we ask for a headcount plan early. How recruiting, employment and the collective bargaining relationship work in practice is set out under workforce administration.
Competitive operating economics without locating on the border
Hermosillo combines access to the US border with the operating dynamics of an interior manufacturing market.
Hermosillo is outside the Northern Border Free Zone, which creates a different labor-cost environment from border cities such as Nogales, Tijuana or Ciudad Juárez, where the statutory wage floor is set higher. What a plant actually pays depends on the positions, the skills, the shift structure and the local labor market. So compare role by role, on a fully fringed basis, not against a headline rate. The roles below are the ones an aerospace, automotive or electronics operation hires against here.
| Representative role | Starting fully fringed employer cost/hour |
|---|---|
| Unskilled production | about $5.53 |
| Machinists | about $10.38 |
| CNC machinists | about $13.32 |
Third quarter 2026, at 17.5 pesos to the dollar. Starting points rather than market averages. Fully fringed means the base wage plus the employer-paid payroll taxes and the statutory and contractual benefits carried in Tetakawi’s labor-cost model, rather than a worker’s take-home pay. It does not include Tetakawi’s services, overtime or shift premiums, employee transportation, indirect labor, or other project-specific operating costs.
How to use that
Ask any location for a fully fringed figure against your own job titles rather than a headline rate. We keep a working cost model and will run your positions against it.
Several industries, not one anchor
Ford is the best-known name in Hermosillo, and the city’s manufacturing base extends well beyond it.
Electrical and electronics manufacturing is the largest employer among the city’s manufacturing sectors, with 16,762 IMSS-registered jobs at 31 August 2026, and transport equipment is second at 13,396. The city also includes aerospace, medical-device and industrial-product manufacturers, among them Becton Dickinson, Stanley Black and Decker and, since June 2026, Netafim’s USD 20 million precision-irrigation plant. That mix gives an incoming manufacturer access to skills and suppliers developed across more than one industrial sector.
Why Río Sonora
Hermosillo answers the location question. Río Sonora can simplify the operating question.
You do not have to assemble the building, the workforce, the IMMEX structure and the trade-compliance infrastructure independently. Tetakawi has operated Manufacturing Campuses in Sonora since 1986, and its Río Sonora Campus in Hermosillo is a place where those pieces already coexist, with the manufacturer continuing to control production. It is a 210-acre master-planned Campus, so the next line, shift or building can go on the same site.
3
move-in-ready Class A buildings, 36,000 to 39,000 sq ft each
210
master-planned acres, with room for new construction
60 MVA

What is available, how it compares with the rest of the Hermosillo market, and what the Campus adds are covered in industrial space for lease in Hermosillo. How the services work, and how a manufacturer leaves them without leaving the Campus, is in shelter services in Hermosillo.
Who Hermosillo fits best
Here is where Hermosillo tends to be a strong fit, and the one case where it should be compared directly against another region.
Often a strong fit for
Manufacturers serving customers in the western United States.
Automotive, aerospace, electronics, electrical and industrial products.
Operations that need skilled production labor rather than only low-cost assembly.
Companies that value room to scale and optional operating support.
Compare first if
Your customers sit in Texas, the Gulf Coast or the eastern United States. For programs weighted toward those markets, northeastern Mexico may produce a better logistics equation and should be compared directly; our Saltillo guide covers that lane.
Your model turns on the lowest available labor rate in Mexico. Hermosillo’s case is capable labor at a competitive operating cost, not the lowest labor rate.

Five questions to ask before you shortlist Hermosillo
Including this one. Ask them of every location on your list and compare the answers rather than the brochures.
- Which crossing will my freight actually use, and what is the dwell time?
- Not the nearest border point on a map. The commercial port your carrier will route through, its operating hours, and what happens to your schedule when it backs up.
- Is this city inside the border free zone or outside it, and what does that change?
- It changes the statutory wage floor and the labor market you hire from. Hermosillo is outside. Ask the same question of every city you compare and check it against the CONASAMI list.
- What has to be imported into this market today?
- Ask for the list of what is sourced locally and treat everything else as an import with a lead time and a transport cost attached.
- Who has run a process as difficult as mine here, and to what certifications?
- You are testing whether the market holds under load, not counting logos. Ask which approvals are held locally, by whom, and ask to speak with them.
- What does the utility position look like for my connected load?
- Ask for capacity that is contracted and fed today, not planned. Bring your connected load to the first meeting.
Where Hermosillo belongs on your list
Hermosillo gives you access to the western United States, an experienced workforce and a diversified industrial base, without requiring you to locate directly on the border.
And if you want to enter without assembling every piece of a Mexican operation yourself, Tetakawi already has the infrastructure in place at Río Sonora. Bring us your product, customer locations, staffing plan, space requirement and major utility loads. We will show you where Hermosillo fits, and where it does not.
